History

The Department of Statistics, University of Karachi was established in the year 1963. Since then it has progressed and grown in these 46 years. Both in terms of physical and academic facilities the Department is not far behind with respect to any department of Statistics in Pakistan. Similarly, within the University of Karachi the department is ranked amongst the most popular departments.

At the initial years, the department was allocated only two rooms for the office and laboratory and class rooms were shared with the Chemistry Department. Later on, eight rooms in the Mathematics Department were given to the Statistics Department. During 1969-70 a plan was prepared for a separate building of the Department. The construction of a spacious building was started in 1974. The building was completed in the year 1978 and the department moved to its new premises. With the availability of space the activities of the department grew manifold and we saw stability in the post-1978 era.

After a period of twenty six years the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Islamabad approved an amount of Rs. 22.17 (million) for the development of the second phase of the Department of Statistics in July 2004. This amount covered the construction of the new block with well equipped computer labs and audio-visual conference rooms.
